Primary 6 outdoor learning.

By considering examples where energy is conserved, I can identify the energy source, how it is transferred and ways of reducing wasted energy (SCN 2-04a)

A hibernating dormouse provides a novel context for the study of the insulating properties of different materials and school microclimates. This activity can also support pupils’ scientific literacy as they plan, hypothesise, use fair testing and record results graphically.

Each child/team needed to decorate a plastic cup to look like a dormouse. The dormouse was filled with hot water and the initial temperature was measured and recorded. The children took their “dormouse ” out into the cold . The temperature of the dormouse then needed to be measured and recorded  every 2 minutes. Their challenge was to then uild a nest with insululation in order to save their dormouse’s temperature from dropping futher.

They then built a nest for their ‘dormouse’ using the materials that they believed were best for insulating it.
Once the nest was completed.The dormice were placed inside and put  back in their original position.
The temperature of the dormouse then needed to be measured and recorded again  every 2 minutes.

Next steps:

The children will draw their nest design and note the materials they used and any modifications they thought were needed.
. The resultant temperature drop and stabilization will be recorded in a line graph.
